How to Set Up Distance-Based Pricing in QuoteKit
Distance-based pricing calculates the cost of a job automatically based on real road distance via Google Maps. This guide walks you through setting it up in QuoteKit in under 10 minutes.
What distance-based pricing does
Distance-based pricing calculates the cost of a job automatically using the road distance between two addresses via Google Maps. The customer enters a pickup and delivery location, and QuoteKit calculates the real driving distance and applies your rate per mile to give an instant price.
This removes the need to manually quote every delivery job. A customer can get a price at midnight on a Sunday without you being involved.
Setting your rate per mile
In your QuoteKit dashboard, go to Widget Settings and select Distance as your pricing type. Enter your price per mile - this is the rate applied to the total road distance for the job.
Most UK courier businesses charge between £1.20 and £2.50 per mile depending on the type of delivery and vehicle. Same-day couriers typically charge at the higher end. Man and van businesses often use a lower base rate with add-ons for loading time and extra stops.
Setting a minimum fare
Set a minimum fare to cover your costs on short local jobs. Without a minimum, a 2-mile delivery at £1.50/mile would generate a £3 quote, which does not cover fuel and time. A minimum fare of £20 to £35 is typical for most courier and delivery businesses.
Adding surcharges
QuoteKit applies surcharges automatically based on when the customer books. You can set a percentage or fixed amount for:
- Weekend jobs
- Evening jobs (after a time you specify)
- Bank holidays
- Same-day bookings
These apply on top of the distance price without you having to do anything. A Saturday delivery automatically shows the weekend rate to the customer at the point of quoting.
Testing your pricing
Use the preview in your QuoteKit dashboard to test a few real routes. Enter addresses you know well and check the price matches what you would normally charge. Adjust your rate per mile until the output looks right for your typical jobs.
Once you are happy, copy your embed code and add it to your website. Every delivery enquiry from that point on gets an instant price automatically.
